Can HIFU make you look old? Read on to find out whether HIFU facial treatments cause more harm than good.
HIFU (High-intensity Focused Ultrasound) uses focussed beams of sound to pinpoint exact depths in the skin where tiny holes are created that tighten the skin when they heal (all pain free, we promise!)
Usually one can progressively see results up to 4 months but some up to 6 months. For most clients, even during the initial treatment, they are able to notice and enjoy the difference post-treatment. HIFU can:
- tighten the skin on the neck
- reduce the appearance of jowls
- lift drooping eyelids or eyebrows
- smooth wrinkles on the face
- smooth and tighten chest skin
HIFU is for ageing skins and yes, you can be too young to even need this treatment. It would be best to invest on more appropriate medispa facials that can address your specific skin goals.
Can HIFU make you look old?
Well the short answer is YES if it is performed by an inexperienced therapist or a cheap device! Eeekkk that’s a scary thought but it’s absolutely true… here is why:
HIFU is a non ablative and non invasive, way of stimulating collagen production and tightening the SMAS (Superficial Musculopaponeurotic System), a.k.a the muscles of the face where the surgeons operate in a face lift. It is gentle and effective, hence an extremely popular choice for lifting and global anti-ageing results. Don’t be fooled by the way the surface of the skin remains seemingly unaffected, there is a lot of stimulation that happens in the deeper layers with this treatment.
The results we obtain at The Temple Skincare & Spa are amazing for tightening loose jowls, ageing necks, double chin, as well as lifting cheeks and eyes.
However, when in the hands of therapists with minimal experience and little understanding of the anatomy of the skin, there is definitely a risk that these treatments can decrease the youthful fatty deposits in your cheeks, for example, that keep you looking young and plump.
The expert therapist and consultation is key to the results you achieve in a safe and effective manner at Temple. The HIFU machines can treat multiple depths within the skin. Generally, treating at 4.5mm depth will treat to tighten the muscles (SMAS) of a slackening drooping skin, treating at 3mm will create new collagen and elastin in the lower Dermis layer, whilst treating at 1.5mm stimulates new cell turnover, tightens the very surface and boosts collagen in the upper Dermis.
Each treatment is tailored to the specific client’s concern, skin density and fat deposits. As professional and senior therapists at Temple, We will assess these three key aspects in a thorough consultation before proceeding with the treatment.
As you can imagine, if your therapist was to treat a skin that was thin and sallow and lacked fatty deposits in the cheeks area with a 4.5mm depth this could break down any fat that was remaining there and possibly cause you to look older… so yes HIFU ‘could’ make you look older if performed by the wrong therapist. You are in safe hands at The Temple Skincare & Spa as we have the three ingredients you need for a safe and effective result: Consultation is key + Experienced senior therapists + Top quality devices.

Highly trained and capable
At Temple Skincare & Spa and and with the particular model of in-motion HIFU equipment that we use, there is no risk of developing adverse reactions. Our therapists are also highly trained to perform HIFU on various skin types and for a number of different modalities.
In fact, Our medispa therapists have been trained in HIFU by Dr Gregoris Stavrou of Biotec Italia, a respected nano-scientist and international lecturer for multiple medispa devices. The training involves extensive theory and practical applications before we are allowed to work on supervised models until the required standards are met. Only then are our medispa therapists authorised to provide the service to our clients. Before we even conduct a HIFU treatment, we make sure to assess and examine your skin to ensure that HIFU is right for you.
