How often should I be having a facial?
Well the answer depends on what you would like to achieve with your skin. If we are correcting a skin condition or specific concern, then we generally need to see you more depending on the treatment modalities to correct the skin. However, if you would just like to maintain a healthy skin and of course, replenish the soul with some R&R then every 4-6 weeks is perfect. It needs to work with your time and budget.
Get in touch with us for a FREE Visia Skin Analysis, to discover what Temple Skin means to you. The Visia is a professional digital scan of your skin providing a look underneath the surface of what you see daily. Your therapist is then able to advise you on the best lifestyle, products, and treatments to achieve the results you deserve.
Temple also has a variety of skincare products that guarantee results compared to your generic store-bought ones. These highly complement our skincare programmes and are perfect for the time in-between your visits to the spa. We highly recommend cleansers, moisturisers and serums from our friends at IMAGE Skincare and Germaine de Capuccini. If you don’t see what you’re looking for or if you are a bit unsure of which one is best for you and your skin type? We’ll be very happy to assist and guide you on which ones your skin needs.
Why do I need a serum?
Out of everything you use on your skin at home, your cleanser and your serum would have to be the two most important products. Why? Because the serum is the one product guaranteed to bring about change to the condition of the skin if you are using a good quality one with high active ingredients. Professional serums come with many different active ingredients, and each active ingredient targets a different skin concern, so best to speak to your Temple Therapist to prescribe the best one for your skin concern.
One pro tip on using cleansers — do a double cleanse! By doing so, you remove impurities and dirt on the first cleanse and then with the second, you prepare the skin to absorb active ingredients that will totally nourish your skin.
As far as Getting the trademark Temple Skin, using the serums that we absolutely love like those with hyaluronic acid top our list. Hyaluronic acid (HA) helps your skin look and feel more supple and youthful. HA is naturally occurring on your skin and serves to retain moisture and reduce dry skin. However, the natural aging process and exposure to things like ultraviolet radiation from the sun, tobacco smoke and pollution can dramatically reduce your skin’s natural HA. When applied to the surface of the skin, hyaluronic acid serums can reduce wrinkles, redness and dermatitis.

I exfoliate every few months, is this enough to achieve good Temple Skin?
NO is the short answer. When youth is on our side, our skin cells naturally regenerate (that is, they shed and new ones grow) every 28 days. Sadly, as we get older this process slows down A LOT… just another thing to hate about getting older (lols!). Due to the slowing of this natural process, we need to encourage the skin to shed the outermost surface cells, which is made up of dead flat keratinocytes. They do not reflect the light nicely, leaving our skin dull, lifeless and almost grey looking. By gently exfoliating the skin, we allow way for our nice juicy skin cells to be on the surface to leave the skin looking glowing.
What sort? There are loads of different types of exfoliants — chemical exfoliants, mechanical exfoliants and combined exfoliants. The different types are suitable for different types of skins, and this will also determine how often you need to exfoliate. As each skin is unique, it is always best to speak with your Temple Therapist about whether a gritty granular scrub, a gentle enzyme exfoliant or perhaps an AHA/BHA exfoliant is best for you.
For instance, skincare products with AHA or BHA can be your BFFs to keep your skin acne-free, ageless, glowing and healthy. AHAs can be used if you have skin concerns like hyperpigmentation, age spots, melasma, scars, or enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles and enlarged pores. On the other hand, BHAs address skin concerns like sun damage or acne. For the latter, one of the most popular and most effective BHAs we use is the Clear Cell Salicylic Clarifying Pads.
So how often is best??? This depends on many things so best to get professional advice from one of our Team, however as a general rule of thumb, 2-3 times a week is average as we get older. This will also stimulate the oil glands, to encourage the skin to naturally keep moist as long as you’re not using a stripping product. A common thing I hear is that clients simply forget to exfoliate.
Why do I have pigmentation?
If you lived in Australia for many years, chances are when you look in the mirror, you will see freckles or brown patchy marks. This is all called Hyperpigmentation.
What is happening on cellular level
Beneath the surface of our skin we have many cells and structures. One of these cells are called a melanocytes and these little things looks like an octopus with long dangly arms. Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes their colour. A number of factors can trigger an increase in melanin production, but the main ones are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and skin injuries or inflammation. When the melanocyte cell is stimulated in any way, it creates the brown colour melanin and then transfers it down its long dangly arms and injects it into all the surrounding skin cells. Then that’s when we see brown marks on our skin.
What causes my pigmentation?
- Well lets face it, the sun is by far the biggest cause of pigmentation in Australia. If you have grown up in Australia you will be guaranteed to have sun damage pigmentation. UVA rays stimulate these brown producing cells called melanocytes, to create brown colour within the skin to protect your skin from the inflammation that the sun causes. Most times this appears as spotty freckles but more aggressive exposure can leave to more severe spots and marks.
- Post inflammatory Pigmentation (PIP) is another type of pigmentation. As it’s name implies, it occurs when the skin has been inflammed or trauma has occurred , for example from a pimple, a cut or burn, then there is inflammation under the skin which again stimulated this brown melanin colour. This occurs mostly in darker skins and can be very frustrating. When you get a simple pimple, the skin thinks it’s being invaded with infection and as a defence mechanism your body creates this brown colour to contain the so called invasion almost as if it were a military action. Then the pimple clears, but that brown colour remains for a long time afterwards.
- Melasma and Chloasma both appear as milky patchy brown discolouration, normally like a butterfly effect under the eye and upper cheeks, and sometimes on the upper lip and forehead and even chin. Melasma often occurs during pregnancy so make sure you wear sunscreen! Chloasma usually occurs from long use of contraceptive pills, steroids, or even hormonal conditions. Here, the melanocytes become over stimulated and over produce melanin in response to changes in oestrogen and progesterone levels. This melanin becomes trapped in the epidermis and may also extend to the dermis, making it difficult to treat. Pigmented cells then slowly migrate to the surface, making the pigmentation visible. Melasma occurs more commonly in women and darker skin types.
How do I treat hyperpigmentation and restore clear Temple Skin?
There are loads of different ways we approach pigmentation as depending on the cause and your natural skin colour, depends on our approach. For sun damage, its usually fast and simple. A couple of IPL treatments and you’re done, but It is best to book a professional skin analysis with one of our experts, as if you are to treat melasma in the same way we treat sun damage, then you are likely to exacerbate the problem. We would always insist anti-inflammatory ingredients at home, plus Sunscreen is a must. We would also use a combination therapy of any of these: LED light therapy to calm those little melanocytes, peels to turn the pigmented cells off faster, needling to break down melanin clusters and encourage healthy cell activity, or we have 3 different lasers we could use for the right skin type. Most recently, we have begun using the Cosmelan Method and the results show a very high success rate!

Does sunscreen go under my moisturiser or over?
This is a common thing we get asked about Temple Skin in the spa. Your sunscreen always goes on your skin last, after all the deliciously effective ingredients in your serum and moisturiser have penetrated. The sunscreen is designed to sit on top of your other products to protect your skin form UVA and UVB exposure.
Many clients say they weren’t using sunscreen as the typical ones that can be purchased in a supermarket, make your skin greasy and break out. One thing to remember is that not all sunscreens are the same! We have 5 different sunscreens in spa and our personal favourite is the Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturiser as, yep you guessed it, its a matte finish. Its’ a moisturiser and SPF all in one so easy to save a step in the morning and simply pop this over a serum and voila, ready to prime and makeup!
That brings me to the next pro tip — wait for your sunscreen to absorb properly then simply apply your favourite primer and makeup and then you’re ready to face the day, safely protected from that dreaded UV exposure.
Temple Skin Reminder — Did you know that the reason why us Aestheticians hate hearing that you are not wearing sunscreen EVERY SINGLE day, is because the UVA rays are the longest rays, they’re invisible and even present on cloudy days. And these little buggers are the ones that increase an enzyme in our skin called collagenase, that goes around like little pac men and eats up all our good collagen that keeps us looking young. It also stimulates our brown pigment producing cells, called melanocytes, to cause freckles and sun damage pigmentation as well as accelerating hormonal patchy pigmentation. Please wear SPF EVERY day, even if you’re inside.
I am an adult, why am I getting acne still?
80 per cent of Australians experience acne during their teenage years, more than 30 per cent of women and 50 per cent of men continue to struggle with the skin condition after reaching adulthood.
Acne can have a dramatic impact on your confidence and quality of life, which is why many people set out on a quest for the right treatment and the holy grail of clear skin. From supermarket cleansers to home remedies, this can include all manner of options and unfortunately a lot of wasted money.
Part of your journey to clear Temple Skin may include a combination of regular treatments plus skincare you can take home and add to your daily routine. For example, our Advanced Acne package includes cleaning facials, laser treatment, advanced peels and a skin needling sessions to reduce scarring, however we use smaller combination therapies for less severe cases. By approaching your acne from several different angles, we are able to deliver more noticeable results.
Your treatments will be a gentle approach, and is always appropriate to your age and the grade of acne you suffer.
Does laser hurt?
The word on the street is that yes… Laser does hurt. However, The medical grade laser that we have at temple skincare & spa, is quite the opposite. The idea of having Laser, on your private parts, is scary enough without adding pain to that!
The reason why most lasers hurt is because of the way they cool the skin while they are treating it with Laser. The most common machine on the market uses a cryogen gas to cool the surface of the skin and then hit the laser to heat the hair follicle. This change in temperature not only excites the nerve endings, hence making it painful, but it can also excite the melanocytes which are cells that create brown pigmentation. This is one of the reasons why some lasers can be scary.
Our medical grade laser is imported from Italy, and works quite differently to most on the market. Our Laser has Cold water running through the plate where the Laser is emitted from. What does this mean? This means that the skin is consistently being cooked before, during and after, the laser is being emitted. This means, As there is no extreme change in temperature on the skin, our laser machine is very comfortable for our clients. It also means the risk of post pigmentation on the skin is extremely low and we can treat darker skins and even other ethnic skins, safely.
