Why you should wear SPF everyday even when indoors during lockdown? During these crazy times you might find yourself skipping SPF as part of your morning skincare routine as not many of us are spending much time outdoors.
SPF is something that needs to be part of your skincare routine every single day whether you are indoors or outdoors or whether the sun is shining or the rain is pouring and that’s because there is more than one way light can affect our skin.
There are two main types of light we discuss a lot as beauty therapists while educating our clients about the benefits using SPF as part of their skincare routine, these are UVA rays and UVB rays.
UVA rays are around all year long these rays penetrate more deeply into the skin than UVB rays do these are the rays that can be responsible for premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer. UVA rays are so strong they can even penetrate through glass including our car windscreen and windows our home windows.
UVB rays are what I like to call the burning rays these are the rays that burn our upper most layers of the skin. These rays unlike UVA rays that are around all year long are more predominant in the summer months.
When choosing which SPF is best for you always ensure you chose a Broad spectrum sunscreen this ensures you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays.
Harmful HEV Light from screens
Apart from UVA and UVB rays there is another light called HEV light which stands for HIGH Energy Visible Light. HEV alight is emitted by the sun which is why we would always suggest a Broad spectrum SPF but it can also be emitted by things like our phones, computers and even electrical lights.
I don’t know about you but my screen time is definitely up during lockdown doing endless scrollling through Instagram, FaceTiming family and friends and the constant online shopping!
HEV light is quite a new thing we are hearing a lot about in the beauty industry and although a lot of studies are quite new there is evidence and studies that support the fact that HEV light can cause similar damage to the skin as UV light does (CRAZY I KNOW!!!!!!)
Studies have shown that certain SPFs that contain zinc oxide can be particularly effective when trying to minimise the effects of HEV light on the skin.
